Matt Portner
General Counsel
Matt is devoted to transparency and the protection of tax collection principles to ensure essential public services are funded by elected officials in the execution of their duties.
Matt started with SRI in 2016. He provides a critical integral component to SRI’s overall success, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, contract development, connecting with county attorneys to promote the integrity of the tax sale process, and working in governmental affairs to promote fairness and efficiency in statutes designed to recover delinquent tax processes. In addition, Matt provides oversight in business governance and manages outside counsel needs for obtaining expertise where needed. He is devoted to transparency and the protection of tax collection principles to ensure essential public services are funded by elected officials in the execution of their duties.
In addition to his everyday duties, Matt teaches about tax sale processes, providing essential knowledge at several continuing legal education sessions for Indiana lawyers as well as outreach at the national level to examine tax collection processes among differing states. The combined experiences of SRI employees and the knowledge base Matt provides distinguishes SRI as a devoted company serving elected officials and taxpayers across the country.
Before arriving at SRI Matt served as an enlisted infantry rifleman in the United States Marine Corps. After his service to our county, Matt obtained a BA in sociology with a philosophy minor from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, a master’s degree from Indiana University, Indianapolis in the sociology of complex organizations, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University McKinney School of Law. He also brings experiences to SRI from working as a stockbroker, in state government in the executive and legislative branches, and in law enforcement. Matt also has published an academic article on veteran related health problems as a co-author while pursuing his master’s degree.
When not working, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, traveling the country, and seeing the beauty of its national parks. Matt and his family also enjoy international travel seeing historic sites and experiencing unique cultures. He is active with his community homeowner’s association can often be found walking and riding bikes within the community as his family continues to develop.
